Saturday Telegraph January 12 2013 “TrendonTravel – Gulet Holidays
“We occasionally have family conversations about which was our favourite holiday. Always high on the list was a week we spent on a gulet, sailing along the Turkish coast, anchoring to swim and enjoy lunch in a quiet bay or a marina in the evening. Just as important as the sense of peaceful escape were the meals, which came as part of the deal. The food prepared by the on-board cook was, as is often the case in Turkey, utterly delicious – table-loads of hot and cold mezzes, salads and fruit were freshly prepared and served up three times a day under the awning on the after deck. We did have to pay extra for the beer, wine and soft drinks, but these were charged at shop rather than bar prices and we spent almost nothing else during the entire week.

Bella Magazine May 2013 Turkey Hire a gulet
If there’s a gaggle of you, it makes sense to charter your own boat. Gulets are traditional wooden sailing boats that travel the coastal waters of Turkey (and sometimes Greece and Croatia). It’s a great way to see a place and be totally lazy at the same time, as staff do all the cooking and sailing. Sun yourself on the deck and stop off occasionally to cool off in the sea. Water sports equipment on board typically includes snorkelling gear, canoes, windsurf boards and the like. Pull ashore to explore ancient ruins and cities. Lie on a beach, go shopping or even hit the nightlife. Gulets range from simple to super-slick and luxurious. Info www.daydreams-travel.com

Daydreams has 29 gulets and schooners available for private charter, plus three further basic, low-budget boats. There are three categories: standard, luxury and deluxe, which come with varying numbers of staff and extras. Boats in the latter two categories, for example, come with speedboats and waterskis, in addition to the standard canoes and fishing equipment. DayDreams also offer schooner parties for people wanting to join a cruise rather than charter their own. These leave on set departure dates aboard a boat catering for a maximum of 10 guests. Prices do not include flights, but do include transfers. Drinks are provided at cost, and full-board meals average about £22 – £25 per person, per day. The luxury boat Zenos II costs about £8,200 per week during July and August.

For a gulet holiday consider DayDreams which uses high quality boats and offers flexible itineraries along Turkey’s south western coast and the Dodecanese. Most bookings are private charters but more affordable schooner parties popular with singles are also offered.

Set up by Jenny Day in 1987, this is one of the most flexible and intelligent organizers of gulet or schooner cruises. She contracts 14 top-quality 59-82ft crewed gulets sleeping up to 12 people, most air-conditioned, but a couple of cheaper options which aren’t. “We will cater for the lobster and champagne brigade as well as vegetarians on a low budget.” She says. Customers can create whatever menu they want and food and drink is paid for at cost price on the boat. Itineraries, too, can be tailor-made with any number of days and routes available. Boats cost from about £3,500/£4,500 including transfers, taxes, linen and fuel, but not food, drink or flights. As well charters there are “schooner parties”, popular with singles: prices start at £625 for one week, departing May 28, full-board but no flights.
Conde Nast Traveller May 2005. Nick Trend Answers Travel Queries on taking a cruise in a gulet.
“The first company that springs to mind is DayDreams Travel which has a range of top quality 18-25metre gulets sleeping up to 12 people most as air conditioned although in September you may not need it. You can organize any itinerary that you want and agree menus, wines and all other catering in advance. Food and drink is charged at cost price and you may when on the boat.
